The 25th Meeting of the STCU Governing Board

The 25th Meeting of the STCU Governing Board convened on 15 November 2008 in Kyiv, Ukraine, and approved 21 regular government-funded projects (including project extensions) totaling approximately US$1.08 million and ˆ1.68 million. The Governing Board also inducted 14 new organizations as STCU Partners and approved 20 new Partner-financed research projects, and 3 Partner Project extensions, all totaling approximately US$2.56 million and ˆ156,510. Since 1995, the STCU has sponsored over $166 million (USD equivalent) in collaborative research projects that engage ex- WMD scientists and experts of the former Soviet Union.

Among these new projects are the very first Targeted R&D Initiative projects between STCU and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. The 6 new STCU - Azeri Targeted Initiative projects total approximately US$99,830 and ˆ34,690. The Targeted R&D Initiatives Program began in 2005, with the goal of co-financing, as equal partners, jointly selected projects that combine STCU nonproliferation goals with recipient country S&T priorities. This inaugural cycle of the STCU - Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences Targeted Initiatives program joins the already successful Targeted Initiative Programs with the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and with the Georgian National Science Foundation.

The 25th Governing Board meeting also saw the approval of the STCU administration operations budget and supplemental activity budgets approved the extension of STCU executive and chief officer staff, reviewed the results of STCU program activities in 2007, and discussed the STCU future concept and strategic planning development.
