Participation of the STCU to Ukraine-CERN talks on Associated Country status

On April 13th, STCU Deputy Executive Director (EU) Michel Zayet attended a meeting with a Delegation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), opened by Minister of Education and Science, Youth and Sport of Ukraine Dmytro Tabachnyk, in the presence of Chairman the State Agency for Science, Innovation and Informatization of Ukraine, Dr. Volodymyr Semynozhenko, and of Dr. Borys Griniov, Ukrainian STCU Governing Board Member.
In March last year, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and CERN signed a Joint declaration on scientific and technical cooperation. On October 20 2011, the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine issued a Regulation "On signing the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and CERN concerning granting the status of Associate member of CERN." Following this, an official Letter of Application was addressed to the President of CERN in December 2011. The visit of the CERN Special Working Group, investigating the factual information provided in the application, was the last step for Ukraine to become an Associated Member Country of CERN, with a forecasted date set for the end of June this year. As of today, already 47 Ukrainian Scientists have been working with the Large Hadron Collider project. Dr. Felicitas PAUSS, Head of CERN International Relations noted that cooperation with Ukraine shall increase meaningful scientific experiments in different areas of fundamental research.

Talks took place with Dr. Tadeusz Kurtyka, CERN Linkperson with Eastern Europe States, on the possibility to have collaboration through STCU with Ukrainian and Georgian scientists. These R&D projects may attract a possible combination of funding, originating from CERN, the Participating Countries and eventually European Union organizations.
