STCU held a Roundtable on WMD and Dual-use Expertise/Knowledge Redirection and Prevention in cooperation with United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs

The Science and Technology Center in Ukraine in cooperation with United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs held a Round-table on WMD and Dual-use Expertise/Knowledge Redirection and Prevention at the premises of NTUU Kiev Polytechnic Institute.

The purpose of the event was to learn of experiences in CBRN Experts redirection to non-prohibited activities conducted under the STCU Non-Proliferation and Conversion Program over a period of 17 years in Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine. Participants had an opportunity to learn of experiences and challenges in the same fields from such countries as Iraq and many others.

The Roundtable well supported at the national and international level gathered officials and Experts with purpose to discuss what effective practices could be of interest for activities of the UN 1540 Committee to prevent non-State actors from gaining access to nuclear, chemical and biological weapons and their means of delivery and develop CBRN security culture as a platform to bring together all stakeholders.

This event was attended by US Ambassador John Tefft, Canadian Ambassador Troy Lulashnyk, Mr. Borys Gryniov, Deputy Head of State Agency on Science, Innovations and Informatization, Mr. Oleksandr Aleksandrovych, Director, Directorate for International Security and Disarmament, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, representatives of the 1540 Committee, international and regional organizations, Diplomatic Missions of STCU parties, and other invited experts.

STCU and UNODA will continue to explore ways to increase their cooperation in CBRN
Security culture domain, strengthening the relations between the two bodies and ensuring that the objectives outlined during the Roundtable are realized.
