The Science & Technology Centre in Ukraine as an Instrument for Developing an EU-Ukraine Research Partnership


On November 3, 2003, the Albert Borschette Centre in Brussels, Belgium hosted an information session entitled The Science and Technology Center in Ukraine as an Instrument for Developing an EU-Ukraine R&D Partnership. The event was one of the first of a series of closer joint interactions with the European Union and its institutions initiated by the STCU. The objective of this information session was to provide information and establish networks that would permit for a better use of the STCU as an instrument for European organizations to achieve some of their goals in Ukraine.

The event was organized in close collaboration with the European Commission and the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union.

STCU Executive Director, Yves Carmel and STCU Senior Deputy Executive Director, Borys Atamanenko welcomed more than 100 representatives from the European Commission, European Parliament, European Council, European Economic and Social Committee, diplomatic and regional missions in Brussels, Scientific Centres, NGOs, private business and mass media to the conference.

The audience was provided with opening statements from Roman Shpek, Head of the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union, Philippe Busquin, Commissioner for Research, European Commission, Vasil Kremen, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine, and Louis Bellemin, Head of Unit, International Scientific Co-operation Policy Research Directorate-General, European Commission.

The information session was followed by a reception sponsored by the Mission of Ukraine to the European Union. During the reception a poster display was presented by some of Ukraine’s finest scientists who gave practical examples of their R&D projects highlighting major technology areas including: energy conservation & production, biotechnology, medicine & healthcare, environmental monitoring & protection, material science & information technologies, equipment & devices and experimental industrial technologies.

Nine scientists from some of Ukraine’s leading scientific institutions, and senior STCU staff, gave presentations and presented participants with information about their institutes’ competence and possibilities for cooperation through the STCU.
